Piano Lessons For Beginners – Discover the Ways to Learn Piano

Would you like to learn how to play the piano? In the past, learning the piano meant that you had to go to the tutor’s house or alternatively the tutor had to come to your house. This situation was cumbersome and expensive. Sometimes the tutor would not be available which means that you have to skip the lesson for that day. Private tutoring is also expensive. If for instance you pay $20 per 1-hour lesson, how much will you pay for 80 lessons? The amounts involved are staggering and would naturally put some people off.

The other alternative would be to attend a music school. You may have one in your town. However, this requires that you make significant adjustments not only on your time but also on your pocket. You will have to create time to go to the school probably after work. It is also necessary to factor the transport costs into your budget. You will also need to consider the tuition fee for the lessons that you are to take. Accumulating those costs translates into a big budget probably into thousands of dollars.

The other alternative is learning how to play the instrument through online piano lessons. You no longer have to physically travel to some location and sit with someone for you to learn how to play. Piano lessons for beginners now provide that long sought opportunity to learn how to play the piano from the comfort of your home. All you need is a computer and a reliable internet connection.

Learning how to play the piano through online lessons has great benefits. The most important consideration for most people is cost. To access these lessons you only have to make a one-time payment and you will receive the lessons by email. The cost savings are huge considering that you have access to those lessons for life. You also get to learn the lessons at your own pace and at your own convenience. You can rush through some lessons you feel you may have already grasped. You are also able to repeat a lesson that you have not really understood well. The lesson can be repeated any number of times until you get it right. Imagine if you had to pay a tutor for that. How much would you spend?

Learning piano lessons online also allows you to choose the type of music you want to learn. The situation is very different when you have to attend a physical class somewhere. Most music schools and private tutors prefer to teach their students using classical music. While this may not be bad in itself, classical music may not be your favored genre. Online piano lessons allow you to choose the type of music you prefer and the song you would like to play.

Scheduled Time for Music Practice

Music practice  has to be scheduled into your busy  timetable,

the same as anything else!  When is it ever the best time to do anything ?

Being able to set a regular time for all  events, and setting this in relation to your level of alertness and /or space, is most important.

Make time for  practice of new lessons,

regardless of what they are.   For learning, a body needs to be warm, relaxed, comfortable and receptive.

For me, my ideal time will be when I am alert and able to be totally focused on my lessons.   This is usually during the early part of the day when I know I will have an uninterrupted period of time.  I feel alive and alert and don’t have any pressing chores or tasks.

Relaxing in the evening

Once the household chores are attended to in the evening, I like to use this time as well.   Once again – I have time to relax into my practice and enjoy the  experience.

This is something we all need to find our own breathing space for.  I have tried to practice in the afternoons, but by that time of the day, I am beginning to flag  and don’t do justice to myself, my piano or my lessons.

Music practice has to be a task that is pleasurable  and provides some level of entertainment even in the early stages of your learning.

Trying to fit time in around mealtimes and family high usage times can be quite stressful, not only for you as you try to practice, but to those  who are trying to fit their needs into this time space as well.

Tips and Hints

Some simple tips and hints I keep in mind when preparing for my music practice,  include and no doubt have always been part of a training regime ;

  • Good posture and being relaxed  help to set the mood for your session. Make sure your piano stool is close enough to allow for easy reach of the keyboard, and far enough away to ensure freedom of movement .
  • Warm up with some finger exercises before you start practice
  • Practice each new piece slowly- get the rhythm, tone and sound correct – the brain needs to process this information
  • Have you music stand and music well lit
  • Create the sound that the piano has to give, piano is about sound - depth and tone
  • Remember how important Timing is. Count out the rhythm or invest in a Metronome. Music is as much about rhythm as sound
  • Read ahead of the bar that you are playing – keeps the rhythm and movement,- creates good practice. Slowen down if necessary.
  • “Hold an apple” as you play the keys. Keep your wrists up off the keyboard, fingers bent as if holding a small apple in your palm and push your knuckles up
  • Always play on the tips of your fingers.
  • Look at the keyboard and the music as often as one another. Both have a lot of information that are important to playing music
  • Look ahead for repeat patterns so you can  prepare your fingers for the next  piece to  be played.
  • Improvise and play little pieces by ear to add some relief at the end of your practice

Music is all about sharing the beauty of  the scores that we aspire to play with aplomb at some stage, to encourage others to share your pleasure and maybe instil a desire also to learn this majestic instrument.
